Gentrification in Durham

In 2018, reporters at The Herald-Sun and The News & Observer started a year long project exploring the effects of gentrification in a rapidly growing city.

“I guess I’ve been gentrified,” said Rosemary Abram. Rosemary and her husband John, who both grew up in Durham, live on a fixed income. The apartment building they lived in was sold to a company in Texas in 2017, and on April 1, 2018 they were given 30 days to vacate or apply for a renovated, more expensive unit. Downtown Durham is growing outward. In its path are places like Mt. Vernon Baptist, a historic African-American church. The neighborhood around it has changed and most members drive to church from further and further away, but Mt. Vernon has no plans to leave.
